Can Dogs Eat Tomatoes?
If you are a tomato lover – then you will be glad to know that generally speaking dogs can safely eat tomatoes, but like anything in life there is always a “but” involved and we will talk about that a bit!
Tomatoes come from a plant family called Nightshade – this plant family typically contains a compound called solanine which is typically found in the stem and leaves of the tomato plant. This compound is also found in less ripe tomatoes so it is important to make sure you are only offering the ripest tomatoes to your dog.
If you notice your dog has ingested an unripe tomato or the green parts of a tomato plant you may want to keep an eye out for some signs of poisoning.
If you notice any of these signs, then it is important to get your dog to the veterinarian as quickly as possible and be sure to let the doctor know that your dog ingested a tomato so they can treat them quickly!
Never feed your dog green or unripe tomatoes! Only ripe tomatoes that are thoroughly red and have no leaves or stem should be offered!
