Sanctuary Brewing Company NC

I like beer.

I like animals.

I like breweries that like animals.

At Sanctuary Brewing Company, they do not just make great beer – they make great things happen for animals (and humans too!).

When you step into the brewery you know right away how much the owners love animals. From the images of the sanctuary animals they have decorating the walls to the tap handles that are done in a variety of animal shapes, there are no doubts this place is special.

Who Is Sanctuary Brewing?

Joe Dinan is the co-owner who left a career in finance to start on a journey in craft beers which was a passion passed down from his dad. He worked at several breweries and earned a certificate from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling before opening Sanctuary Brewing Company with his partner Lisa McDonald in 2015.

Lisa is a lifelong animal advocate and was a corporate consultant (and is a MENSA member) – who just wanted to make the world a better place – and we think she and Joe are off to an amazing start.

Located in beautiful downtown Hendersonville, NC the brewery features 16 draft beers and has live entertainment 7 nights a week. Their microbrewery is a one-of-a-king vegan brewery that just wants to be a place people can come, have a great time – drink amazing beer and help the owners do good in the world.

They used to host animal yoga fundraisers but had to stop once they started offering food. But they do have an outdoor patio where pups are welcome and do so much more!

Other great things they do for animals:

  • Fundraisers where proceeds are donated to partner rescues
  • Provide free beer to animal oriented fundraisers
  • Pet food drives
  • Free vet checks for pets
  • Tours of their Sweet Bear Rescue Farm (free, but donations are encouraged)

They Do Not Just Help Animals

The brewery features what they call a “Kindness Wall” where people who are in need can take items if they are needed like clothing, essential bags and more. Another thing we love is that they host a free dinner every Sunday – where you pay what you can.

They are also involved in program that hosts community days where people in need can get free haircuts, health checks and job assistance.

Since they have opened – and at the time of this writing they have raised over $10,000 for a variety of charities.

Sweet Bear Rescue Farm ( a registered 501c3)  is the passion project of Lisa and Joe where they house about 40 animals including dogs, cats, chickens, goats, pigs and even George the Turkey!

According to their website they even recently saved 16 baby chickens from a religious sacrifice. Because EVERY life matters.

They named the sanctuary after their late dog Nala, who is their inspiration for their animal advocacy work. The sanctuary is meant to be a place where animals will be loved for their entire lives.

Visitors can stop by the sanctuary so they can really engage with these beautiful animals and learn more about them to better understand their level of intelligence and emotional connection they can have with people.
