Fundraising is probably the most difficult part of running a rescue or shelter. Having heard so many say they are sick and tired of fundraising – we know it is an issue many face in the animal rescue world.

Because of this we are always on the lookout for great new fundraising ideas that any animal rescue or shelter can do fairly easily, takes minimal time and have a no or low cost to get started. Although products and events are still successful options, we know that easier fundraising opportunities are always a welcome change.

Scrip Fundraising LogoThis is why when we learned about ShopWithScrip – we wanted to make sure word got out about how awesome this program is. It is easy to use, offers a product/service that everyone uses and the amount that can be earned is pretty generous and can add up quickly.

It is like fundraising – only without the work.

Great Lakes Scrip Center was created in 1994 by a group of people who were tired of the old fashioned fundraising methods and wanted to create something different. They chose the world of gift cards! With over 30,000 nonprofit groups using the service it is pretty safe to say it is working – and working well.

So how does Scrip Fundraising work?

It is pretty easy which makes it more appealing! As a nonprofit organization you create an account and then you encourage your supporters to purchase gift cards using your unique enrollment code – then you get the cards at a discounted rate!

With gift cards available at over 700 retailers – there is really something for everyone.

Some of the groups we have seen using this program have supporters that go as far as making gift cards their primary form of payment for every day essentials like gas and food so they can continue to support their organization all year round.

How you can use ShopWithScrip!

Example 1 – Physical Gift Card: If a supporter orders a $100 Panera Bread gift card for a friend as a gift – they will pay you $100, you will place an order for the gift card but only have to pay $92.00 for it (Panera offers an 8% rebate).

Example 2 – Physical Gift Card: Encourage your supporters to purchase gift cards for themselves to use for things like gas and food. So if someone purchases a Sunoco gas card – you get 3% back, now imagine how much that can add up to if that supporter ONLY uses that Sunoco gas card all year long!

Example 3 – Physical Gift Card: Purchase popular gift cards yourself and keep some stock to sell at events or promote them year round to your supporters via social media so you become their one stop shop for gift cards!

Then by promoting the online options they have like ScripNow and MyScripWallet – the options for raising money become endless.

Several gift card options for increased earnings!

There are several ways you can work the program to raise funds:

  1. Physical gift cards – you promote the gift cards to your supporters – they place orders with you directly and pay you – then you submit 1 order to Scrip and once you receive the physical gift cards you disperse them to those that ordered them. There are over 700 retailers in the program.
  2. ScripNow – encourage your supporters to order cards via their ScripNow option so they can buy e-gift cards that can be purchased and then printed or accessed via a mobile phone. Over 380 retailers are part of the specific option.
  3. ReloadNow and Reload – allows you to order a reloadable physical gift card that you can then easily add funds to when the balance is low. This is perfect for more commonly used cards like gasoline or food stores. Over 120 stores are part of the option.

You may have to do a little education to help some less technically savvy supporters – but it will be well worth it for the benefits.

One downside to Scrip Fundraising!

The only downside we can find to this program is that you cannot purchase the gift cards with a credit card – you have to either pay with check, ACH or PrestoPay.

The reason for this is because the credit card fees would eat the donation amount – so it is understandable why they do not accept credit cards. But, for those that may not be as tech savvy may have a little trouble setting up the alternate payment methods.

What is PrestoPay?

PrestoPay is the method of payment that Scrip utilizes for their programs. Supporters simply create an account, add their banking information and any orders for gift cards will automatically be paid for from this account.

That is a pretty unique idea. Though it is always best to give people as little runaround as possible when wanting them to do something.

    Hello ,

I saw your tweet about animals and thought I will check your website. I like it!

I love pets. I have two beautiful thai cats called Tammy(female) and Yommo(male). Yommo is 1 year older than Tommy. He acts like a bigger brother for her. 🙂
I have even created an Instagram account for them ( https://www.instagram.com/tayo_home/ ) and probably soon they will have more followers than me (kinda funny).

I have subscribed to your newsletter. 🙂

Keep up the good work on your blog.
