Tired of filling your cat up with treats that are filled with ingredients you cannot pronounce? Me too!
This tuna puff cat treat is easy to make and has just a few simple ingredients that your cat will love.
This recipe does use people tuna, which is something you should only give your cat on occasion. Giving them tuna too often is not a healthy option – contrary to what many people think!
Your cat may love tuna and come running when you make it – and while giving them a bite once in a while is ok, tuna should never be a main source of their diet. Too many calories and lack of real nutrients a cat needs are just two reasons it is not a good option for them.
You also do not want them to become spoiled and only want tuna – which may in turn have them not eating their normal cat food.
But the occasional treats – or even bites of tuna are A-OK in conjunction with a balanced cat-friendly diet!
So go ahead – get these tuna puff treats in the oven and make your cat happy today!
Ingredients
- 2/3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 egg
- 3 ounces drained tuna (no salt added)
- 1 tablespoon tuna water (no salt added)
- 1-2 tablespoons additional flour
I highly recommend you ONLY use tuna that specifically states NO SALT ADDED! Too much salt is not good for your feline friend. Getting tuna in water is the healthier option and you can then use the water you drained from the tuna for the tuna water.
I do not recommend using tuna in brine or oil – just plain old water is best.
Instructions
1 | Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2 | Place tuna, water and egg in a food processor and blend
3 | Add flour to food process and continue to mix until thoroughly blended
4 | Place dough onto a floured surface and use rolling pin to flatten. The thickness should be about 1.8″ or approximately the height of 2 quarters.
5 | Using a knife, cookie cutter or other item cut dough into small shapes or pieces. In the image below you can see I used the top of a decorating bag. Perfect size if you have one!
6 | Place cut pieces of dough on a lined cookie sheet with enough spacing between each to allow room to “puff”.
7 | Bake for 15 minutes or until the treats are puffy and golden brown.
8 | Remove from oven and let cool.
9 | Place in airtight container to keep fresh. Treats should stay fresh for about 10-14 days.

How many treats you get will depend on the cookie cutter or size you cut them in. I did little circles and the recipe made about 24 treats.
Just made these for my roommates older cat and she LOVED them. She’s taking meds too so it was a good treat to hide the medicine in.
Just made these and marinated the puffs w more tuna! They LOVE them! My oldest is getting skinny so I hope these will fatten him up!!!
Oh my goodness, my daughter just came across this recipe and we are beyond excited to try these with our 2 cats!
Why on earth would you give a cat wheat flour? Talk about an unhealthy food for a cat, way worse than brined tuna.
Hi Sue, thanks for your thoughts. I spoke to my vet who noted that the wheat flour has no nutritional value for a cat, but is not harmful for them in small amounts. I also noted that I do not recommend brine but plain tuna water. Sorry, if you disagree, but I feed these to my cat and have never had an issue. Jill
I AM SO EXCITED, I HAVE 2 FEMALE CATS, MON AND DAUGHTER, I GOT THEM FROM MY NEIGHBORS, THEY KNEW ME ME PRETTY WELL. THEY LOVE MY 1/2 ACRE PROPERTY, LOTS OF TREES, PLANTS ETC. I AM HOPING THAT THEY LIKE THE TUNA TREATS!
Sounds like a good life for those kitties! Would love to know if these homemade tuna cat treats are a hit!
